Frequently Asked Questions: Double Glazing Installations

As one of the top double-glazing companies currently serving the people of Hornchurch and Romford, we often find ourselves on the receiving end of long list of questions from our customers, which is only to be expected. After all, we’re the experts and we’re always happy to help with a client’s queries.

On this page you’ll find the answers to many of those questions:

Would my new windows be exactly the same as the old?

While we can certainly try to match your old windows as closely as possible, it is almost certain that there will be differences. Most double-glazing units last upwards of ten years if properly installed and maintained. In that time regulations change and technology advances so much that an exact match is almost impossible.

I’ve heard that burglars can take out the glass panels from a double-glazed unit and gain entry through the window. Is this true?

It may have been true way back in the day, but not anymore. All our windows are internally glazed, meaning that the glass can only be removed from the inside of the unit.

Do you dispose of the windows after installation?

Yes. We always remove the previously installed window frames and glass panels, as well as any rubbish or mess produced during the course of the installation. We take it away and ensure that it is disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.

How long does it take to install windows and doors?

It depends on the size of the job and any special fitting requirements, of course, but a two-person team of double-glazing engineers can normally install between three and six windows per day.

Do you use contractors to install your windows?

No. We have our own in-house team of double-glazing engineers – people who have been with the company for years, and who bring decades of combined experience with them to every job.

Do I need to get planning permission before installing windows and doors?

It’s normally not a requirement. However, if you live in a conservation area, you may be limited in terms of the designs and materials you are allowed to incorporate into your new windows. It is your responsibility to check this out before hiring us to install your new windows, as we are obliged to adhere to these regulations.

Are your windows child safe?

We can include a number of child safety precautions in our windows, at your request. Simply mention your requirements to our double-glazing experts when we come to survey your property.

I have leaded/stained glass windows at home. Can keep them, but replace the frames?

Of course. Most stained glass and leaded panes can be installed into our frames.

Can you provide an estimate over the phone?

While we are happy to provide a rough quote over the phone, with no obligation to use our services, it will be just that – a rough estimate. For a more detailed valuation and a more accurate quote, our double-glazing engineers would need to visit the property, measure up the windows in question, ensure there were no other mitigating factors involved.
